Junior Warden Annual Report 2010

First of all, let me congratulate everyone for sticking together to keep HTSB alive.  Without your support, the congregation could have been totally separated, dismantled, or even nonexistent, we don't know.  The church could have been under the total control of the diocese.  Who knows what could have happened?  My belief was our faith and prayers gave us the strength necessary to continue and stay together.  Whatever problems we encountered made us work together even harder.  We remained steady, hurt feelings healed, and once again, troubles were overcome.
I was voted as Junior Warden on my last year as a vestry member.  As a novice to that role, it was frightening.  It was the trust given by the vestry members, support from my senior warden partner, and guidance from Bishop Ben which kept me going.  Its a responsibility that requires a lot of dedication, commitment, and faith.  I prayed a lot for the ability to separate personal issues, stay focused on my goals, keep calm, and be as positive as possible in dealing with conflicts.  Forgive me for any of my shortcomings. I tried so hard but still got pushed to lose control.
According to the Episcopal Church Cannons, the term warden dates back to seventeenth century England because of the individual’s responsibility to unlock the church doors for worship and other events.  Ultimately, the warden's responsibilities are defined by tradition, the particular needs of the congregation, and the individuals particular talents.  When the congregation does not have a rector, the senior and junior warden have the following basic responsibilities:
  • Function as the communication link with the diocese
  • Convene and preside at vestry meetings
  • Make provision for Sunday worship
  • Take responsibility for the administration and maintenance of the congregation properties
  • Act as custodian of the congregation registers and records
I am proud to say, we stepped up to the challenge and fulfilled our responsibilities.
In addition to keeping up with these basic responsibilities, last year, we accomplished several other tasks with your support and cooperation:
  • Painting part of the Hultgren Hall where we serve lunch, men's group.
  • Wood flooring in Hultgren Hall, men's group (and a couple of the women), photos of some of the project participants right.
  • Rental contract for St. Augustine's Chapel established with Sunrise Christian Community.  Extended their contract to include use of one of the class rooms for child care during their service.
  • Rental income supplemented by income from various external users who rent the facility for specific events.  Rates defined for members and non-members.
  • Clean up days supported by many members, young and old.
We extend a hearty Thank You to Valance and Gilbert, for keeping our facility clean, tidy, safe, and always ready for worship and fellowship.
This coming year, we have various improvements planned such as: rectory improvements, church lighting, address exposed wiring inside the church, and renovation of both bathrooms in Hultgren Hall.  We are now in the process of discussing priorities, getting more bids, and selecting appropriate contractors based on job performance and reasonable/acceptable costs.  Remember that we have an aging property that requires continuous maintenance for our continued safe use.
As an outgoing vestry member, I encourage you all to get involved.  The experience is worth it.  Neither experience, education, nor perfection is required, only a willingness to do your best.  We have learned a lot from each other and grown together as a team.  We have corrected our mistakes the best we can.  As a member of the vestry, you are never left alone.  You have the full support of each other, the congregation, as well as the staff, clergy, and Bishop of the diocese.  Your efforts can only make HTSB a better place.  As I leave the vestry, I continue to give my full support.  Thank you for giving me the chance to serve.
With All My Love,
Jane Bawayan
Junior Warden, HTSB
