Junior Warden Annual Report 2010

First of all, let me congratulate everyone for sticking together to keep HTSB alive.  Without your support, the congregation could have been totally separated, dismantled, or even nonexistent, we don't know.  The church could have been under the total control of the diocese.  Who knows what could have happened?  My belief was our faith and prayers gave us the strength necessary to continue and stay together.  Whatever problems we encountered made us work together even harder.  We remained steady, hurt feelings healed, and once again, troubles were overcome.
I was voted as Junior Warden on my last year as a vestry member.  As a novice to that role, it was frightening.  It was the trust given by the vestry members, support from my senior warden partner, and guidance from Bishop Ben which kept me going.  Its a responsibility that requires a lot of dedication, commitment, and faith.  I prayed a lot for the ability to separate personal issues, stay focused on my goals, keep calm, and be as positive as possible in dealing with conflicts.  Forgive me for any of my shortcomings. I tried so hard but still got pushed to lose control.
According to the Episcopal Church Cannons, the term warden dates back to seventeenth century England because of the individual’s responsibility to unlock the church doors for worship and other events.  Ultimately, the warden's responsibilities are defined by tradition, the particular needs of the congregation, and the individuals particular talents.  When the congregation does not have a rector, the senior and junior warden have the following basic responsibilities:
  • Function as the communication link with the diocese
  • Convene and preside at vestry meetings
  • Make provision for Sunday worship
  • Take responsibility for the administration and maintenance of the congregation properties
  • Act as custodian of the congregation registers and records
I am proud to say, we stepped up to the challenge and fulfilled our responsibilities.
In addition to keeping up with these basic responsibilities, last year, we accomplished several other tasks with your support and cooperation:
  • Painting part of the Hultgren Hall where we serve lunch, men's group.
  • Wood flooring in Hultgren Hall, men's group (and a couple of the women), photos of some of the project participants right.
  • Rental contract for St. Augustine's Chapel established with Sunrise Christian Community.  Extended their contract to include use of one of the class rooms for child care during their service.
  • Rental income supplemented by income from various external users who rent the facility for specific events.  Rates defined for members and non-members.
  • Clean up days supported by many members, young and old.
We extend a hearty Thank You to Valance and Gilbert, for keeping our facility clean, tidy, safe, and always ready for worship and fellowship.
This coming year, we have various improvements planned such as: rectory improvements, church lighting, address exposed wiring inside the church, and renovation of both bathrooms in Hultgren Hall.  We are now in the process of discussing priorities, getting more bids, and selecting appropriate contractors based on job performance and reasonable/acceptable costs.  Remember that we have an aging property that requires continuous maintenance for our continued safe use.
As an outgoing vestry member, I encourage you all to get involved.  The experience is worth it.  Neither experience, education, nor perfection is required, only a willingness to do your best.  We have learned a lot from each other and grown together as a team.  We have corrected our mistakes the best we can.  As a member of the vestry, you are never left alone.  You have the full support of each other, the congregation, as well as the staff, clergy, and Bishop of the diocese.  Your efforts can only make HTSB a better place.  As I leave the vestry, I continue to give my full support.  Thank you for giving me the chance to serve.
With All My Love,
Jane Bawayan
Junior Warden, HTSB

Treasures Annual Report 2010

The financial report of any organization for any period of time is a summary of the activities for which that organization was established, be it an activity to make a profit or a project dedicated to the attainment of a defined purpose. Ours is the mission statement printed in the Sunday bulletin.
The congregation of Holy Trinity and St. Benedict Parish is dedicated to serving God by seeking and serving Him in all persons. We serve the Risen Christ by actively sharing our spiritual gifts, material resources, and unique cultural witness with our community and the world. In our spiritual journey together, we gather as a group to draw strength and encouragement from the Diving Presence and from one another through worship, fellowship, and hospitality.
Success or failure in our endeavor can't be measured in charts or graphs. This activity has ups and downs and this is a common picture in the whole diocese. How do you think Holy Trinity & St. Benedict ended up in Alhambra?

We had a downturn last year in both attendance and giving. This is probably due to six years without stable spiritual leadership. While we have had a number of priests, they did not quite fit our needs. We have had disagreements about how we conduct parish business, and in our search for God, how we serve each other while engaged in that search. If we study Christian history, we will learn that disagreements have been a part of that history from the 12 tribes of Israel to the present when different groups of Christians have contradicting opinions on divorce, abortion, women in ordained ministry, same sex unions, etc.

In the financial projection for the coming year, we are quite hopeful. We expect to have our new rector and we hope all the scattered flock will come back to the fold when they hear the voice of their new Shepherd. We also refer to the earlier parish life of Holy Trinity and St. Benedict when the regular Sunday attendance was 150 and the communicants filled the altar rail for or five times. In the parochial reports of Bishop Zabala's years, it was mentioned that there was a potential for a 400 member parish and registered active members were 225. We will continue to manage finances with the same care as we have done when we were still a renting mission at St. Martha's West Covina. With God's continued blessing, we shall prevail.

Special note is made to the fact that financial audits for HTSB were recently completed by Simpson & Associates for 2007, 2008, and 2009.  The summary letter from Simpson & Associates stated:
Our examination was made in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards and accordingly included such tests of the accounting records and such other auditing procedures, as we considered necessary in the circumstance.  ....   In our opinion, the Financial Statements present fairly the financial position of Holy Trinity and St Benedict Episcopal Church and the results of its operation for the year ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles.
If desired, please see the treasurer, undersigned, or any vestry member for a copy of 2010 year end financial statement or the 2011 budget forecast.

Parish Council Annual Report 2010

What a year this has been for our parish!  The middle of the year was an especially emotional and difficult time for our congregation.  The difficulty was felt throughout the congregation and it adversely affected all, including members of the Parish Council.  However, we pulled through and saw to it that the work has to go on, despite any difficulties.  It was not easy.  Nevertheless, knowing we are here for each other, members went about their responsibilities and continued their support for the Vestry, and its work.

As most parish members know, the Parish Council, with the different ministries comprising its membership, was a concept thought of by the Vestry and was established about 3 years ago.  The Council gets its strength from this membership and with this strength is able provide the resources needed to discuss the WHOLE issues, good or bad.  This Council is tasked by the Vestry to encourage ongoing discussions amongst the members and various ministry leaders to enhance their growth with better coordination and communication.  With this constant dialogue, communication, which is our primary goal, is improved.  This improved communication made it possible to stay focused even when distractions and unrest in much of the congregation became overwhelming.  Drawing on the strength from each other, the members went about their responsibilities demonstrating to the congregation, they will always be there to continue the work as needed for the betterment of a stronger HTSB congregation.

Currently the members of the Council are:
  • Ministries/Groups - Leaders
  • ECW – Annie Anderson (Treasurer, Hosting)
  • ECM – James Bawayan
  • Youth – Hazel Danggoec, Jannea Bawayan, Noel Medrano, Erin Laoyan, and Charlene Ocab
  • Sunday School – Virginia Ramos, Paul Stapp
  • Prayer Group – Betty Bagsiao
  • Adult Education – Andres Lubrin
  • Stewardship – Ely Bacayan
  • Girls Friendly Society – Kate Botengan
  • Men of St. Andrews – Art Bacayan, James Bawayan
  • Liturgy
  • Acolyte – Felix Kubulan
  • LEM – Betty Bagsiao
  • Choir
  • Readers – Mark DuFault
  • Altar Guild – Lori Biag
  • Tim Botengan – Sr. Warden
  • Jane Bawayan – Jr. Warden/facilities maintenance
  • Max Batong – Treasurer
  • Paul Stapp - Master Calendar Keeper
  • Brad Sherman – Web site Coordinator
I hope to call a meeting soon to reconvene the group when we will elect a Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary to continue the leadership onto the year 2011.  Until then, Chris and Ely will continue to chair this Council.  At that time also, we hope to get more volunteers to fill in the gaps.

I ask for your cooperation and support as we continue with much enthusiasm and lots and lots of energy needed for the work for this important ministry.  Much THANKS!

Respectfully submitted,
Chris T. Dagan, Parish Council Chair
